JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR

FAFALO!

Full Length, One-act, 90 minutes • 3 Women, 3 Men

Six actors play eighteen roles in a farce about a perfect idiot who becomes king. The king has died leaving no heirs and an obscure law propels the rascally Fafalo – town janitor – into the role of king.  Fafalo basks in the role of king until the murderous Banjawi arrives, threatening to decimate the kingdom. The spirit of Commedia dell’arte conjures up the excitement and comedy of the circus as Fafalo schemes his way to a confrontation, where the stage is set for the most surprising of outcomes.

THE SNOW QUEEN

Full Length, Two acts, 2 hours • 5 Women , 4 Men

Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s classic tale, The Snow Queen is a funny and enchanting holiday play with music. When Gerda’s best friend is takes by the beautiful and mysterious Snow Queen, the brave and plucky girl sets out to find him. But she’ll have to make her way through a haunted garden, a camp of robbers and the frozen north to bring him home. Aided by a fast-talking raven, and his dimwitted side-kick, Gerda attempts the impossible and learns a thing or two about friendship along the way.

RED THREAD

Full Length, Two acts, 2 hours • 7 Women , 5 Men

During a turbulent time in Ancient China, a provincial governor employs Hongxian, a secret female assassin known only as “Red Thread” to protect his province. Red Thread is notorious and feared throughout the region. But after a series of chance events, Hongxian converts to Buddhism and adopts its precepts of non-violence. Her internal world of morality - once clear – is turned upside down. She faces her greatest conflict as she navigates how to wage her battle against evil without killing. A multiple award winner, Red Thread won the Los Angeles Garland Award for “Best Play of the Year.”

Author Kate Chopin shocked America in 1899 with her novel The Awakening. Her female protagonist challenged society’s norms about what a wife and mother should be in this landmark piece of fiction. This one-woman drama takes place on two days in the author’s life, four years apart, where she deals with the condemnation of her novel, and finding her voice. Spend an evening with an inspiring, extraordinary woman.

AQUITANIA

Full Length, One act 140 minutes • 5 Women, 4 Men, 1 Girl

In the kingdom of Aquitania, a girl plays a board game whose pieces are the characters from the legends of Charlemagne. At the same time, a young woman, Marguerite, is summoned to Aquitania to solve a military crisis. Why her? She is no political tactician. She is a librarian. We discover that Marguerite is enacting with her new friends the same plot that the girl is working out on her board game. Marguerite and the audience set off on a strange and wonderful journey, much like Alice in Wonderland, where you must embrace a new kind of logic in order to win. And oh yes: It’s a comedy.

SALAMANTICUS

Full length, One Act, 90 minutes • 5 Men, 4 Women

Salamanticus is about an ailing country and three misfits - an orphan, a simpleton and a vagabond - in search of a supernatural book they think will set everything right. The book, The Salamanticus, is supposed to contain all the secrets of the universe, but is rendered in a most mysterious manner. In the end, the search our heroes thought they were undertaking was not the search at all, as the enigmatic book had an itinerary of its own.

Playwright George S. Kaufman dominated Broadway in the 1930s and 40s. In this one-actor comedy, it’s 1937, and George and collaborator Moss Hart struggle to make Broadway history with their new play, Once in a Lifetime. But their comedy isn’t funny yet and, told from George’s point of view, the odd couple of playwriting has just a few weeks to fix it before it opens. In the process, the Marx Brothers, Bernard Shaw, the Algonquin Round Table and all the movers and shakers of Broadway’s Golden Age are conjured up, giving a little inspiration and making By George a comic smorgasbord.

CHOMOLUNGMA

Full Length, Two Acts, 2 hours • 8 Men,5 Women, 1 boy

Chomolungma (the Tibetan name for Everest) is based on the Everest disaster of May 1996, whose real-life drama of survival during an unexpected storm held the hearts of the world that spring. Chomolungma is a mountain drama, set in an unspecified time long ago which mirrors the details of that historical tragedy. Never mind that mountain-climbing is a peculiar, European, 20th-century institution. The mountain, and mountain climbing, is a mythic symbol that has been with us since the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh.

A NIGHT WITH MAE WEST

Mae West was an American original. She was a whip-smart actress, singer, playwright and producer who bucked the system and made a name for herself with her unapologetic sex appeal - captivating a nation during the depression and beyond. In this one-woman comedy with songs, Mae West tells how she took control of her life and shook up Hollywood. This Queen of the Double Entendre defied the censors and saved Paramount Pictures from bankruptcy, all while demonstrating how she became a household name.
